Why?

태양, 달, 지구가 차례로 일직선상에 놓이는 현상을 일식이라고 한다. 달에 의해 태양이 완전히 가려지는 것을 개기 일식이라고 하고 태양의 일부가 가려지는 것을 부분 일식이라고 한다. 태양, 지구, 달이 차례로 일직선상에 놓이는 현상을 월식이라고 한다. 달이 지구의 본그림자 속으로 완전히 들어갈 때는 개기 월식이 일어나고, 달의 일부가 본 그림자 속에 있을 때는 부분 월식이 일어난다.

The phenomenon in which the sun, moon and earth are in this order in one straight line is called a solar eclipse. The sun completely covered by the moon is called a total eclipse of the sun, and a part of the sun covered is called a partial solar eclipse. The phenomenon in which the sun, earth and moon are in this order in a straight line is called a lunar eclipse. A total eclipse of the moon occurs when the moon is completely in the umbra shadow of the earth, and a partial eclipse of the moon occurs when a part of the moon is in the umbra shadow.
