지질시대는 선캄브리아시대, 고생대, 중생대, 신생대로 나뉜다. 선캄브리아기는 지금으로부터 약 46억 년 이전의 시대를 말하며, 고생대는 5.42억 년~2.51억 년 전 사이의 지질시대를 말한다. 중생대는 약 2.51억 년 전부터 약 6,600만 년 전까지의 시기를 말하며 신생대는 약 6,600만 년 전에서 현재의 기간을 말한다.

Geological eras are divided into the Precambrian era, the Paleozoic era, the Mesozoic era, and the Cenozoic era. The Precambrian era refers to the period before approximately 4.6 billion years ago from now, and the Paleozoic era refers to the period from approximately 542 million years to 251 million years ago. The Mesozoic era refers to the period from approximately 251 million years to 66 million years ago, and the Cenozoic era refers to the period from approximately 66 million years ago to the present time.
