형상기억합금은 아폴로11호에서 안테나를 만들 때 쓰였던 특수한 금속이다. 형상기억합금은 변형이 일어나도 처음에 모양을 만들었을 때의 형태를 기억하고 있다고 일정 온도가 되면 그 형태로 돌아가는 아주 특수한 금속이다. 즉 형상기억합금은 금속내 결정 격자의 형태가 변하면서 원자간 결합은 그대로 보존되고, 적절한 조건에서 다시 원래 형태의 격자로 돌아가면서 변형이 풀리는 원리이다.

Shape memory alloy is a special metal that was used on the antenna of Apollo 11. It is special in that, even after deformation, it remembers its initial form and returns to it at a certain temperature. This is because shape memory alloy retains its atom linkages when the form of the crystal lattice changes, and returns to its original lattice form under appropriate conditions to undo the deformation.
