도르래는 힘의 작용방향을 바꾸거나 보다 적은 힘으로 물체를 이동시키기 위해 사용하는 기구이다. 고정 도르래는 힘의 이득 없이 물체의 운동 방향을 바꾸어 준다. 움직 도르래는 원래 필요한 힘보다 ½ 힘으로 물체를 들어올릴 수 있도록 한다. 움직도르래와 고정도르래가 복합된 복합도르래는 물체를 들어올리는 힘을 1/2로 줄이고, 힘의 방향도 바꾸어 준다.

A pulley is a device used to change the direction of the force or move objects with less force. A fixed pulley changes the direction of motion of an object without the benefit of force. A moving pulley allows the object to be lifted with half the force that is originally required. A compound pulley, which combines a moving pulley and a fixed pulley, reduces the lifting force by half and changes the direction of force.
