감각기관인 눈은 빛을 인식하여 사물의 정보를 대뇌 피질 시각중추로 보내 사물이 무엇인지를 판단하게 된다. 그 중 시각에 관하여 생기는 착각 즉, 사물의 객관적인 성질과 눈으로 본 성질 사이에 차이가 발생하는 경우를 착시현상이라고 한다. 착시에는 기하학적인 착시, 원근 착시, 연속적 움직임에 의한 착시, 빛이나 밝기의 대비에 의한 착시, 요구나 태도에 의한 착시 등이 있다.

The eye, a sensory organ, perceives light and sends information about an object to the visual center of the cerebral cortex to decide what the object is. Illusions regarding vision, in other words, cases where there is a difference between the objective characteristic of an object and the characteristic seen by the eye, are called optical illusions. Types of optical illusion include geometrical optical illusion, illusion of perspective, illusion of continual movement, illusion of light or brightness contrast, and illusion of request or attitude.
