심장은 펌프 작용을 통해 혈액을 온 몸으로 순환시키는 역할을 한다. 좌심방에서 나온 혈액은 대동맥을 통해 온몸을 순환한 후 대정맥을 통해 우심방으로 되돌아오는 대순환 과정을 거친다. 우심방으로 들어온 혈액은 우심실을 거쳐 폐동맥을 통해 좌우의 폐로 들어가 폐포 내에서 산소와 이산화탄소를 교환한 후, 폐정맥을 통해 다시 좌심방으로 돌아오는 폐순환을 거친다.

The heart circulates blood throughout the whole body through its pumping function. Blood from the left atrium circulates throughout the body by passing through the aorta and coming back to the right atrium through the main vein. Blood that has returned to the right atrium goes through pulmonary circulation by going through the right ventricle and into both lungs through the pulmonary artery, exchanging oxygen with carbon dioxide in the alveoli and returning to the left atrium through the pulmonary vein.
