브라질 땅콩 효과는 여러 종류의 땅콩을 한군데 섞어 놓은 땅콩 믹스 캔의 뚜껑을 열어보면 항상 가장 큰 브라질 땅콩이 위에 있다는 것에서 붙여진 이름이다. 흔들리는 케이스 안의 작은 알갱이들은 아래쪽으로 내려가고, 한번 위쪽으로 올라온 큰 알갱이들은 다시 내려 가지 못하고 맨 위층에 남게 된다.

The brazil nut effect was named after the theory that the largest brazil nut is always at the top when you mix a variety of nuts in a container and open the lid. The small grains in the shaking container go down and the big grains that have come up cannot go back down and remain at the top.
